So excited to be sharing my Charleston food guide with you all! We were only there for 4 days but we still got in some good eats! In this Charleston food guide, I'll outline where we actually went and then other places that are on our radar.
Where we ate
Breakfast/Brunch:
- Poogan's Porch: Conveniently located to right next to our hotel, we had true southern breakfast at Poogan's Porch one morning. Try to get there by 10 am if you want to sit on the backyard patio or front porch.
- Basic Kitchen: A healthier restaurant right off of King St with seasonal and local food. We went for breakfast our first day, but it's also a good spot for lunch, dinner, and/or drinks.
- The Rise Coffee Bar: Right across from Basic Kitchen, The Rise Coffee Bar was convenient and had good coffee. It was definitely the best option while walking along King St!
- Clean Juice: A smoothie and juice bar right by the College of Charleston. It's your typical run of the mill smoothie joint, but sometimes you just need a detox while you're on vacation!
- Toast of Charleston: Right on Meeting St, Toast of Charleston has won several awards by the NY Times and Charleston Living Magazine. To be honest, we didn't quite understand why! Its menu is mostly southern comfort food and the ambiance reminded us of a diner.
- Cafe Framboise: We stopped in at Cafe Framboise for a quick breakfast before heading over to Boone Hall Plantation. It has traditional french fare and we got a croissant and quiche. It was decent and fast, which was exactly what we were looking for.
Dinner:
- Wild Common: Put this on your list / make a reservation now! We had such an extraordinary dining experience at Wild Common, formerly Cannon Green. Their 4 course tasting menu is $65 per person and well worth it. The food was fresh and innovative and the staff was so attentive.
- The Ordinary: An oyster bar in a converted old bank. With its cute interior, we understood why this was a hot spot in Charleston. We ordered the double shellfish tower along with two sides, which was more than enough food. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner there but we would choose Wild Common over The Ordinary every time.
- Obstinate Daughter: This is a fun lunch or dinner spot located in the town on Sullivan's Island. It has a beachy, casual interior and is walkable from the beach. We ordered the lobster roll, seafood chowder, and a pasta dish. Everything was delicious and we particularly liked the seafood chowder.
- 167 Raw: A hole in the wall seafood bar, with amazing food. We ordered fried oysters, fish tacos, and a tuna burger. Everything was delicious and I don't think you can order wrong. Because of limited seating, there is usually a long line out the door but somehow we got lucky and walked right in. If possible, try to get there early and aim for a week day.
